چکیده

23 The influence of stance width on frontal plane postural dynamics and 24 coordination in human bipedal stance was investigated. We tested the hypothesis that 25 when subjects adopt a narrow stance width, they will rely heavily on nonlinear control 26 strategies and coordinated counter-phase upper and lower body motion to limit center-of27 mass (CoM) deviations from upright; but as stance increases, the use of these strategies 28 will diminish. Freestanding frontal plane body sway was evoked through continuous 29 pseudorandom rotations of the support surface upon which subjects stood with various 30 stimulus amplitudes. Subjects were either eyes open or closed and adopted various stance 31 widths. Upper body, lower body, and CoM kinematics were summarized using root32 mean-square and peak-to-peak measures and dynamic behavior was characterized using 33 frequency-response and impulse-response functions. In narrow stance, CoM frequency34 response function gains were reduced with increasing stimulus amplitude and in EO 35 compared to EC; but in wide stance, gain reductions were much less pronounced. Results 36 show that the narrow stance postural system is nonlinear across stimulus amplitude in 37 both EO and EC conditions while the wide stance postural system is more linear. The 38 nonlinearity in narrow stance is likely due to an amplitude-dependent sensory 39 reweighting mechanism. Finally, lower body and upper body sway were approximately 40 in-phase at low frequencies (<1 Hz) and out-of-phase at high frequencies (>1 Hz) across 41 all stance widths and results were therefore inconsistent with the hypothesis that subjects 42 made greater use of coordinated counter-phase upper and lower body motion in narrow 43 compared to wide stance conditions. 44 45

Comparison of Postural Balance between Subgroups of Nonspecific Low-back Pain Patients Based on O’Sullivan Classification System and Normal Subjects during Lifting

Background: Balance disorder is one of the most-studied fields in low-back pain patients (LBP). However, there isinsufficient information regarding the effect of LBP subgrouping on postural control. The purpose of the present studywas to compare postural control between subgroups of chronic nonspecific LBP and healthy subjects during lifting. Methods: A total of 35 men with chronic LBP (19 activ...

Comparison of Postural Control and Functional Balance in Individuals People with Intellectual Disabilities with and Without Developmental Coordination Disorder

Introduction: Balance in individual with intellectual disability has a great importance due to the failure to perform motor tasks. The purpose of the present study was to compare postural control and balance function in two groups of individual with intellectually disabled with and without developmental coordination disorder. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional and causal-comparat...

Stability in a frontal plane model of balance requires coupled changes to postural configuration and neural feedback control.

Postural stability depends on interactions between the musculoskeletal system and neural control mechanisms. We present a frontal plane model stabilized by delayed feedback to analyze the effects of altered stance width on postural responses to perturbations. We hypothesized that changing stance width alters the mechanical dynamics of the body and limits the range of delayed feedback gains that...

Effectiveness of Treadmill Training on Balance Control in Elderly People: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Physical exercise would improve postural stability, which is an essential factor in preventing accidental fall among the elderly population. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of treadmill walking on balance improvement among the elderly people. A total of 30 community dwelling older adults with a Berg Balance Scale score of 36-48 and the ability to walk without aid were cons...
